- Question When i turn laptop on,keyboard backlight and charging led light turn on but screen is black,fan not spinning and hard disk not on Started by fixproblems1997 May 18, 2019.
- I have an HP model 13-j002dx which is an HP Envy with a detachable keyboard. I have Windows 10 Home installed on it. The refresh button f5 works when I do fn+f5. When I press f5 to turn on the backlight for the keyboard, nothing happens. I've tried the usual solutions: press the space bar + f12, update the keyboard drivers, and nothing works.

Today I started having an issue where when I try and change the colour of my keyboard through the HP Omen software, it has no effect on the keyboard. Originally my keyboard was stuck to a magenta colour, until I bios updated and turned my keyboard back to red, but now when I try to modify the colour through HP Omen control, no changes are made.

I have tried making multiple profiles and assigning different keys to them, but I've had no success in being able to change the colour.Is there anything I can do to fix this issue? Also, i noticed that if i wanted to turn the backlight on or off, that doesn't work either, implying that the whole hp omen control doesn't work in general. I tried reintalling it and nothing works still. I also reinstalled all of my drivers just incase, with the same outcome as reinstalling hp omen control, no sucess.

Thanks!Try installing the system event utility.I upgraded my product loan Omen 15 notebook to Windows 10 yesterday.Everything works just as it did with Windows 8.1.The only issue I had was that the upgrade removed the scrolling tick mark in the touchpad control utility in the control panel. I am still having no luck with the hp omen control. I tried multiple things, which are 'repairing' hp omen control and the system event utility and there was no luck. I tried uninstalling the system event utility and reinstalling afterwards with no sucess. I would also like to add the information that prior to the keyboard being stuck on red, it was not working entirely. I had to reinstall drivers to make it work again. Another thing I'd like to point out is that my function keys are not working entirely, even though they are set to their regular actions on hp omen control, and not the alternitive.
There is no rush really to help me, because it doesnt bother me too much, but I'd really like to have my 'WASD' keys to be a distinguished color.I retried the function keys. F12 opens a developer console, F11, F10, F9, and F8 do not work. F7 asks if i want to open carrat browsing. F6 moves between tasks in the tasks bar, F5 refreshes the page, F4 just selects the whole url of the page I am on, F3 opens up the windows start menu and when on a webpage creates a search addon on the top of my screen. F2 doesn't work and F1 doesn't work.
When I press the function key and the fn key, all of the keys work properly. Also, when I switch my keys to their alternative, they work. So it's most likely not HP OMEN control that is at fault, but the whole 'Lighting' section.
Ok, you're using your laptop normally and everything is working fine. Then one day you turn on your laptop computer and you're not sure, is it me or am I still sleeping? The screen on my laptop is not working. What do I do now.

Well the good news is that it could have been worse. Now to go about solving the problem there are a few things to determine to see what the problem is.The first thing I would advise to be done is to check your laptop with an external monitor to make sure that it is not the video chip that went bad. So connect your laptop to an external monitor and see if you get a picture (you might have to press the fn and one of the f1, f2, f3 etc.keys together to switch the output to an external display, If you get a picture on the external monitor you know it is not the motherboard, (whew, was getting scared already). If you don't get a picture on the external monitor make sure it is plugged in correctly and that you pressed the correct keys to have the output signal go to the external monitor. If you are sure you did all of the above steps correctly, then shut off the computer and try pressing down on the keyboard while powering up the laptop and see if you get an image. Sometimes if a computer has a loose connection between the GPU (Graphical Processing Unit) and the motherboard it will result in no video or flaky video, so try pressing down on the keyboard while powering on and try see if you get video.
If you get a video output then you will know that it is a flaky video chip and that will have to be fixed.Now back to if you got a picture on an external display. Once you got a picture on the external monitor and established that it is not the video chip or motherboard you will have to try to determine if it is the lcd screen itself or if it is the inverter. The inverter is a small electronic board that controls the voltage that is sent to the backlight (the light bulb of the laptop screen) of the lcd screen.
If the inverter breaks or dies then no voltage gets to the backlight resulting in no video output signal to the display. In my experience working as a technician for nylaptopparts I see that most of the times it is the inverter that is the problem and that is a pretty easy fix, you just have to get the correct inverter that supplies the right amount of voltage and you will be back in business. But in some instances it is the backlight (light bulb) that went, and to repair this is more difficult and more time consuming. One way to see if it is the inverter, is to test the two prongs of the inverter with a voltage meter and see if they are giving off the correct voltage (please read up more on this method, as inverters have high voltage output, so you have to know what you are doing, so I strongly advise to read up on this more prior to doing it, you can read more about this method here; More Info) Another simpler way is to shine a flashlight on the LCD, if you see a faint image then in most cases it is the backlight that needs to be replaced. If you don't see an image even when shining the flashlight then it is most likely the inverter and it should be an easy fix.On a last note if you determined that it is the backlight that is faulty, although it is fixable it requires more time and experience then just replacing the inverter, and if one is not experienced he/she can damage the lcd screen itself as well, so generally if the backlight is faulty either have a laptop repair shop replace the backlight, but only one who has experience. Or another option is to buy a new lcd panel and install it either yourself or proffesionally. Generally it is not very difficult to replace a lcd panel but there are some models that are more difficult so try to ask a laptop repair shop about your specific modelSo if you wake up one morning and your laptop lcd is not displaying a picture hopefully you will be prepared and not have a 'not so bright start'.
